Mack Ave Streetscape Plan

Creating a Cohesive Commercial Corridor

Eastside Community Network (ECN) is building on previous planning efforts along Mack Avenue to develop a preferred community design, from Conner Street to Moross Road — a major transportation and retail corridor serving the east side of Detroit and the Grosse Pointe communities — in order to bring a feeling of consistency and cohesiveness across the four cities.

About the Project

The Streetscape Plan will identify options for improved sidewalks; additional street trees; updated aesthetically appealing street furniture; safer crosswalks; creating public art scapes; and other upgrades. This plan will also be utilized to accomplish the collective goal of making Mack Avenue a street that all residents enjoy and feel comfortable using.

This planning process is a year-long effort that will include multiple opportunities for community members to voice their thoughts and ideas about the future of the corridor. We will create a platform to provide feedback on ideas to improve the functionality of the corridor by creating a unified community space, rather than a barrier. As a result, residents, business owners, and local leaders will have the opportunity to share their personal experiences regarding Mack Avenue.

Over the next eight months, the project team will work closely with residents on both sides of Mack Avenue to develop street design options that best address the issues along the corridor. This is will include building on the corridor’s current assets, while also focusing on future design complements. We look forward to engaging with residents through town halls, pop-up events, surveys, and focus groups that will happen throughout the process!

Development of Design Alternatives

Following the first round of engagement and the existing conditions analysis, the project team began developing streetscape design and corridor identity options based on the feedback from residents and stakeholders. These concepts reflect the goals and aspirations of the communities along Mack Avenue.

Counter Identity & Signage

The following signage concepts were developed to represent the desire for a classic style blended with natural elements. The signs shown below would be placed along the corridor to help create a common identity that extends from end to end.

Streetscape Design Concepts

The following streetscape design options build on the preferences of the community for a safe, comfortable, and active Mack Avenue. Each of these options would include upgraded lighting, new sidewalks, street trees and plants, and safety improvements for pedestrians. These options are intended to show possible changes to the street and will be further refined based on your input.

Mack Avenue has been divided into the following three segments based on the amount of available roadway space:

  • Segment 1 - Conner to Balfour

  • Segment 2 - Balfour to Cadieux

  • Segment 3 - Cadieux to Moross
